For exemplifying humanitarianism through community service, Bellport High School senior Marissa LaSorsa has been recognized as the regional winner of the New York State PTA Youth Humanitarian Award in memory of Stanley Marcus.

The award is presented to high school juniors and seniors who best exemplify the humanitarian principles of Stanley Marcus, who died in 1977 while serving as the third vice president of the New York State Congress of Parents and Teachers. He is remembered for his humanitarianism and dedication to youth through zealous volunteer community service.

LaSorsa has been involved in various community service activities since she was 5 years old. She serves as a Sunday school teacher and runs a weekly youth group at her church, where she has also distributed food for families in need. She is also a camp counselor at East End Hospice’s Camp Good Grief at Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck in Center Moriches. Additionally, she has collected donations for the North Shore Animal League and appeared on the Rescue Bowl, which aired during the Super Bowl, to raise awareness of pets needing to be adopted.

In the fall, she plans to attend Kutztown University in Pennsylvania to study criminal justice and minor in music performance.

The South Country School District extends its congratulations to Marissa LaSorsa for her hard work and dedication to community service.
