Bellport High School government students advocated for change during the school’s fourth annual Civics Day on Jan. 10. The informative and engaging event was part of the district’s New York State Civic Readiness program, Generation Citizen.

During the event, held in the school’s library, Generation Citizen students presented projects they have been working on that involved researching an issue in their school, devising a solution to the issue and then asking stakeholders to implement a solution. Topics included creating a cancer support group for students, expanding Wi-Fi access in the school, allowing seniors to participate in a graduate walk-through at Bellport Middle School, allowing for therapy dogs at the high school, improving bathroom access and uniting Latino students.

In the past, students’ projects resulted in change within their school. In 2023, a project to change all graduation gowns to a single color was instituted.
